Many governments operate ‘managed migration’ policies, whereby permitted migration into the country is amended in line with current national population needs

What are the benefits and drawbacks of such a programme?

The changes in some countries’ schemes of controlling immigration have aroused more and more controversies. It seems clear that there are many advantages and disadvantages associated with such projects.

On the one hand, some people believe that policies for permanent and non-permanent of foreign settlements into country have had a positive impact on a whole social improvement. For example, an investment policy that permits wealthy immigrants to invest in business in exchange for a favourable treatment, early issuance of passports, and permanent resident status. Another example of this is an agricultural policy that may exempt migrant farm workers from taxes to enter a country for the harvest season and then return home at the end of the crop, therefore, this measure can deal with a lack of farming forces. In addition, such schemes have played an important role in ensuring the national security and reducing terrorisms which are believed come from overseas, especially from destabilized regions.

On the other hand, it is argued that some moves from the governments to restrict the number of people across the nation borders also cause the dissatisfied attitudes from those who are in danger and forced to leave their countries of birth in search of better lives. Moreover, racial and ethnic conflicts may be a consequence of different cultures or contradiction from the native unemployment with the higher-qualified immigrants.

In conclusion, I think there is evidence to suggest that some of the changes in the policies for refugees have affected the society in a negative way. But overall, it is clear that most of the amendments have benefited for the majority of people. Nevertheless, the governments should ensure that these positive factors can be sustained in the future.
