Study Abroad The Belgian Bilateral Scholarships The Belgian Bilateral ScholarshipsThe Belgian Bilateral Scholarships (BBS) form an important part of this cooperation programme. The scholarships are managed and executed by the Belgian Embassy in Hanoi and the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC). For the academic year 2008-2009, there are forty (40) scholarships available to Vietnamese nationals who want to obtain Master and PhD degrees from universities in Belgium. The scholarship covers a monthly stipend, return airfare to Belgium, basic health insurance, tuition and other compulsory academic fees. I. REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS The BBS target young, motivated academics, researchers, project staff and others having the potential of contributing to the development of Vietnam. Minimum qualifications: Being a Vietnamese citizen residing in Vietnam; Not being older than 35 years for Master and 40 years for PhD; Having a full-time official university degree; Having at least two (2) years of full-time work experience after completion of their university degree. The experience must be relevant to the proposed Master or PhD study; Language proficiency: Being fluent in English or in French, it is normally required to have: DALF, DELF, TEF or TCF for French; At least 550 TOEFL score or 6.0 IELTS score for English (still valid upon the application’s submission). Institutional TOEFL will NOT be accepted. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact directly with the universities (see Item V below for reference) for specific requirements on which certificates and score requested for chosen courses. ELIGIBLE PROGRAMS AND FIELDS OF STUDY The scholarships are open to Master and Mixed PhD programs offered by Belgian universities. These programs are instructed either in French or in English. Master programs in Belgium normally take 1 or 2 years, depending on different programs and universities. Mixed PhD programs normally last for 48 months of which 16 months will be spent in Belgium and the rest of the time in Vietnam. The scholarships only cover the 16-month period spent in Belgium. Support for fieldwork costs for PhD studies is also available. In this case, scholars have to prepare cost estimates with justification signed by the promoters, submit for approval by BTC Hanoi. Field of study: The BBS are not limited to any certain fields of study. It is up to applicants to check which Master and PhD programs are available in Belgian universities and to make their choice. Applicants can apply only one(1) study programme at one(1) university. However, priorities will be given to the areas concerning environment, water and sanitation, waste management, education, health, agriculture and rural development and public administration.
